Here is another sideswiper that was coved with rust that I picked up and brought back to life. I'm guessing this one was probably made around the 1970s or 1980s but really don't know.

JA1CQJ Straight Key, Sideswiper Combo Key (Monica & White Eagle)

Here is a special Combo Key that was made for me by Katsuyuki Ii (JA1CQJ). On the left-hand side is a straight key named "Monica", after an American friend of his that was a Mexican lady and his English instructor. On the right-hand side is a sideswiper named "White Eagle" which was for a group he belongs to that gets together once a month called GTT (Good Time Trekkers). This combo key is a jo...

I got one from him this year. It's beautiful.
No GHD Butterfly?
@@Sedona-cl6eg I have a lot more than what’s in this video. Including several GHD, but no Butterfly.
Very beautifuls cw-keys
Alberto's keys are a work of art. I just got a like-new Semi Automatico that he made, and it is nothing less than jaw-dropping in its beauty and craftsmanship.
I am having trouble finding a sideswiper. Does SKCC sell t his one?
No, different companies make a straight key or sideswiper in a given year in limited numbers that is made available to its members. The show up on eBay every now and then.
Where is the magnet located?
I love it. I’d like to find one of these to buy and practice cool messages like: “Rot 1 reports allied armor spotted” “Fire solution Dora requested”
beautiful key
i needed one straight key where can i get , if it's secondhand no matter
Depends on what straight key you are looking for.
Very cool Mark. I have a very good condition CTL-B and ST-A. I didn’t know that they made a Bug either. I really like the Brown Bros. Keys.
How much can one like that model be worth?
Depends on what a buyer is willing to go. I would say one would bring between $250 - $450, depending on the condition and getting the right buyer at the right time.
I love to have one of these
102 years old.
Beautiful straight key. 73
That was a surprise to me, since I hadn't realized that BBMC had actually made a bug! I've had my BTL-A since new in 1977, and just picked up the ST-A in Xenia this year. I only recently learned about the bug. I'm a BBMC fan from way back.
I have a prototype too that has a keyer built into the base.
@@MarkAllendorfsTelegraphKeys Wow! I guess there's more about BBMC that I didn't know. I grew up near St. Louis, and my Elmer had a BTL-A so that's how I learned. Still love that key. Was thrilled to find an almost-mint ST-A at Xenia this year, which made me a very happy ham.
Right on. My dad had one of these. This is what I learned on as a kid. You would get brutal RF burns from the screws in the middle of the paddles if your radio(s) were not well grounded.
Hello mark would you be so kind as to make a video on all adjustments 73
So the switch is shorting the two front contacts? Is that right?
Yes. Just as it would if you ran a wire between your contacts on any single lever paddle. This can also be done with a stereo to mono plug adapter for any single lever paddle.
I just acquired a Kriegsmarine (navy) DRP Junker, grey color. Thanks for the video.
Mark, how much did this paddle cost and how can I order one? de: KE7LOY
ecco un altro SCEMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
What do they call those type of nuts on the back where the hacksaw blade goes, if we want to make our own home-brew? The one on the back end not by where the paddle is.....
If you are talking about the round piece that the blade is in, I don’t know. I imagine whoever made this old sideswiper machined it himself. I have used small “L” brackets from the hardware store to make one before.
@@MarkAllendorfsTelegraphKeys That is what im going to use for mine, the L brackets. Ok, so those must be machined. I see them on many side swipers and was wondering what a key word search would be. I may take a piece of bamboo and split it half way down for a couple of home brews when create them. Thanks for getting back to me!
I have look for one of these for years..... Any help in a direction to look ? Thank you. W4EMB
Is the spring so stiff you have to hit it hard and hold base with other hand?
No. That wooden base was way to light to be used with a sideswiper. It has since been put on a different base for that reason.
That is just awesome looking!
I have this straight key too. It's as accurate as a classic Mercedes car 👍
Wow, those are beautiful !!!
Mark, what is a "cootie"? I really like the key!
A cootie is a sideswiper. Basically a single lever paddle that used without a keyer so you control the length of the dits, dahs and spacing and you alternate between your thumb and fore finger.
HI Mark, It has been a long time since I have made any of those. I didn't know this video existed until a fellow ham in Japan sent me the link! LOL Dennis KK5PY
Dennis, you did a great job making this. I have a couple of your other models as well. One larger version about 2 1/2 inches long that is chrome and one that is the larger size, mounted on a base with a clear red plastic piece on the end. All work very well.
Impressive collection! More vids pls!
Looks like a great key, would love to see it operating with the camera placed on a surface that wasn’t being bounced around by the operation!
Beautiful!!! Mine is in route =)
I have seen a couple on eBay but they were $400+. I would love to have one along with a Mehelan Valiant double auto bug that acts like a keyer with twice the normal bug mechanism
I love mine........Some people complain about the off keying noise.... Simple fix.... a nylon bolt or a simple rubber bolt protector on the stop post.
I use a small piece of felt with adhesive stuck to the end of the stop screw on the lever arm. You can’t even see it.
It wasn’t on this when I made the video though.
@@MarkAllendorfsTelegraphKeys yep... that will work as well

@@thequarantinecatholic, thank you. I’m sure you will do great on your General exam.
I was gifted one of these keys by an elderly ham who is selling all his gear and moving into a nursing facility. It's a beautiful key compared to the 3D printed key I use on my portable rig. I too would be interested in their worth. I assume being 1941 vintage they might be worth something today! Thanks for the video.

For me (or my brain) it’s very hard to “switch” from single paddle to sideswiper mode. It’s totally different! How you trained it???? 73 Bernd • DL9UAS/K9UAS
Just do it, hi Your brain will learn. It's like switching from fork to chopsticks. Given that you master both. However, I'd suggest using a dedicated cootie. gl 73
@@resuscitationpicture I will give my best :-)
Beautiful looking key, but that loud clicking would annoy me.
I was holding my phone pretty close to the key so the microphone was picking up the clicks. You don’t really notice it when you are using it.
Where did you get the blue paddles?
I ordered them from Begali. They have other colors too and with the holes and without.
Stunningly beautiful!

Junker is pronounced “Yonker”. The J is silent. FYI only
You are really a wonderful person

I built No. 703 with the large red paddles. It was well made for the money.
Nice fist. Love that legato sideswiper sound.
